There is restaurant around the corner that has a motto “We do not make fast food, we make good food as fast as possible.” Sometimes we really don’t have much time and cooking is not an option. At this point you can have a sandwich, eat some fruit, take something from the freezer and prepare it, buy a ready make meal and heat it up, starve, drink excessive amounts of liquid or simply go to the restaurant. Did I miss anything?
We are eating with our eyes
Which of the above colour schemes do you prefer? A typical hamburger contains a bun, a meat patty, some lettuce and a slice of tomato. Meat sandwich has bread, ham, cheese, tomato and lettuce. There are many different variations of extras available. All of them are usually colourful, such as eggs, pickles; even mayonnaise used can be a bit reddish. Would you choose some tasty but dull canteen menu consisting of mashed potatoes, white asparagus, béchamel sauce and grilled corn?
Learn from the best
When creating a meal at home, even if it is a fast one, you can devote some attention to colour composition. Colours will invigorate you and the ones eating the meal with you. Learn from the fast food masters. They know what they are selling. In the fast food restaurant you will also get 0.5L, 1.0L or even 1.5L of soft drink. It’s almost for free if you take it as a part of the menu.
How to be better than your master?
When talking about fast food, we are mostly talking about deep fried or in some rare cases grilled food with some fresh stuff, usually veggies combined with huge amounts of soft drinks (Coke, Sprite, Fanta, Coke Light, Pepsi, Pepsi Max, Sprite, 7up and so on).
Now you know what you are competing against. Identify the areas where you can be better:
1. Combine a plate made of at least 3 differently prepared foods: a baked or fried one, cooked one, fresh one
2. Pay attention to different colours. Colours are not only appealing, colourful foods also contain different nutrients that will make you feel better and make you healthier in general.
3. Try to include some fresh fruits or vegetables to a meal. It can be in a form of a side dish or dessert.
4. Try to replace soft drinks with water or juice.
